Artist's Comments

One of my historical costume projects; this dress is a reproduction of the fashions that were commonly worn by ladies during the American Civil War. It is made of real silk taffeta and was created using only period sewing techniques. Most of the sewing was done by hand, with the exception of the long seams in the skirt which were sewn on an antique treadle machine from the 1880s.

Looks wonderful. I love the contrast of the silk and the velvet. Is the front a hook and bar closure? I especially love the buckle. Is it period? It gives a great effect.

I finally get around to posting some stuff, and I'm already getting comments. Thanks!

The front closes with hooks and eyes(lots of them), all individually handstitched to the lining. I guess I need to start taking pics of the insides of dresses for everyone who likes period handsewing as much as I do. :)

The buckle is an antique, probabably ca. 1890.
